9/28 & 9/30 - Focusing on Mass Media and Culture
For these two class dates we paused regarding the module's focus on race, gender, class, and intersections with activism to explore in more depth the way meanings become created and encoded in culture and media. This involved us slowing down just a bit to read articles about representations of race in the Chicago news media market, as well as getting the time to study and understand some foundational concepts to the study of media and communication writ large. Specifically, we get the chance to pause and understand what culture means and how culture is produced.
