Group Speech - Helping the Youth of Today be Better Citizens

Research shows that more teens in the United States are using social media to create their identities, make friends, and make social connections. While this type of participation is largely becoming the norm for youth across socio-economic backgrounds and race, traditionally understood forms of civic participation like voting are on the decline.

With your group, craft an informative speech that proposes meeting today's youth "where they are" by synthesizing the readings offered to propose a way to increase voting participation by younger citizens for the 2016 election. Your group will be presenting as a part of a non-partisan think tank that is concerned about the lack of youth participation in traditional politics. You will not be solving the problem. Your group will work collaboratively to present research that could help improve youth voting numbers.

Your group must use two of the articles posted by your professor as research for this project.

Group participation to craft a theme will be evaluated through group participation in an online discussion forum set for this project.

Each individual within your group will deliver a 5 - 6 minute speech based on the same theme.

Each individual within your group will turn in an outline of your speech before you speak as an attachment for this speech.

Each individual within your group will be graded based on the Speech Critique rubric attached in this post.

Your speech must include an introduction, thesis, conclusion, at least one of each type of form of support (example, statistic, testimony) properly cited, the proper number of coordinate and subordinate points in the body of your speech, and transitions before your coordinate and subordinate points.

You are allowed 30 seconds leeway in the timing of your speech. Any amount of time spent under or over the time limits will impact your grade.

As audience members you can be asked to respond in some way during other people's presentations. If you do not respond in a timely manner (arbitrarily determined by me) your own speech grade can lose up to five points.

This speech is worth 30 points.
