YOUR POPPLET in Data-Information-Knowledge
In the beginning, data was scarce, information supreme, and knowledge divine. Then came the transformation ages, with rapid information technology (IT) innovations; we hastily went from the electronics age to the information age to the digital age. By the time the cyber age dawned on us, data was in the air, and whether we like or not, unbounded numbers of bits are in every breath we take and continuously streaming into our brains. Information overloads all our senses and yet knowledge is scarce and intelligence supreme. Suddenly people and organizations alike find themselves drowning in stormy oceans of data, choking on infinite bytes of information…Today Knowledge is power and Knowledge rules!
Visit the following website to conduct a mind mapping activity using the concepts of Data, Information, and Knowledge:
http://popplet.com/ Links to an external site.
Use their free trial application to construct a Popplet of “YOU” that will link Data, Information, and Knowledge about you as an individual to introduce yourself. Start with your name and use different pieces of data including pictures, link them to information such as people you know or associate with, places you have been to, things important to you, and things you like to do, or become or accomplish or have already accomplished etc. in a way that will represent knowledge of you and about you.
Please Share the link of your Popplet or a picture of it with the class and view some other classmate Popplets. You may also share some thoughts and comments about other Popplets and what knowledge you have gained from this activity. Think in terms of the relation between Data, Information, Knowledge, and the individual and social identity aspect from an Informatics perspective. These are some of the topics and concepts we will be exploring throughout this course.
