How to Establish Notification Settings and Preferences

Establishing your notification preferences is a very important process.  This is where you will tell Canvas how you wish to be contacted with course notifications about grades, announcements, assignment changes, etc. through a variety of internet services including email, SMS/text, Facebook and Twitter. These notifications can help you avoid missing important communication with your classmates and instructor and make you aware of activity in your course, but we recommend you log into your course at least 3-5 times a week to ensure you remain engaged in your class.

You must log in and customize your notification preferences before you will receive them.  Please review the steps and make your selections carefully.  You can always return to the settings and make adjustments during the semester. You may also be asked by your instructor to connect to web services, allowing the use of Google Docs, for example. 

Update your Settings

  1. Click the Settings [1] link in the Help Corner in the upper right.
  2. Add Ways to Contact [2] by clicking Add Email Address or Add Contact Method (text messaging).
  3. Enter your email or contact information as requested.
  4. Link to other services (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc.) by clicking the desired service button under Other Services [3].

Update your Notification Preferences - Note: These settings apply to all of your courses.

  1. Locate and click the Notifications [1] navigation link in the left Navigation bar.
  2. Edit Notification Preferences by clicking the CheckmarkClockCalendar, and X icons for each Course Activity [2].
