Settings and Notifications
Settings
Clicking on "Settings" (under the "Account" link on the left) will let you set your preferences for various Canvas settings. You will see something like the image below:
This page briefly shows what Canvas knows about you - your name, e-mail address ect.
To change anything, click on "Edit Settings" on the right. To add another e-mail address, click on "+Email address" or to add another contact method, such as texts to a cellphone, click on "+Contact Method" and choose "text", then fill in the required information.
Notifications
If, under "Account", you instead select "Notifications" you will see a display similar to that below:
This panel controls how often Canvas will contact you and for which events. The ones you will mostly be interested in are "Announcements," "Grading," "Submission Comment," and at the very bottom (not shown) "Admin Notifications". You can leave these as the defaults, or experiment with different settings to find what works best for you. The main point being, if you find yourself getting too many notifications from Canvas, this is where to fix it.
Note: if "Submission Comment" is set to "X" then Canvas will not otherwise alert you if your teacher leaves a comment in an assignment or quiz, or if they respond to a comment of yours.
When you first access the Notifications page, you may see a warning like the one below:
Please read the Privacy Notice and click "Ok".
Feel free to explore the other menu options within Settings, but they will not be discussed here.
Coming Up and Recent Feedback
Back on the course Home page, towards the right side, you will see "Coming Up" and "Recent Feedback".
"Coming Up" is intended to show assignments and quizzes scheduled for the near future. However, IUHS Independent courses normally do not have deadlines, so typically nothing will appear here.
"Recent Feedback" will show you all of your recently graded assignments and quizzes and may be a more convenient way to access them.
