Integrated Roles Diagram (the VENN)
Some of us live very integrated faculty lives. Our activities do not fit neatly into the "buckets" of teaching, research, and service but span boundaries. Unfortunately, our annual reports, reappointments, and tenure and promotion documents all ask that we use those buckets.
The Venn for integrated faculty roles was first published in an article by Gwynn Mettetal and Dé Bryant on Service-Learning-Research. Download Service-Learning-Research. It was later refined for faculty development purposes by an IUSB team at the IU Summer Leadership Academy that led by Mettetal.
This Venn diagram is very helpful for planning your academic career, and can also be used in your promotion dossier. Items that are in the overlap areas could be put into either area as you build your case. But remember, they can only count one place!
