Lesson 7: Slaughterhouse-Five—Chapters 5–10

Overview

In the second half of Kurt Vonnegut’s Slaughterhouse-Five, Billy’s war experiences, virtually all as a prisoner of war, intensify. Most dramatically, you’ll witness Billy’s brief but life-changing stay in Dresden. At the same time, you’ll visit wide-ranging landmarks as Billy continues to hopscotch through time and space.

As you read chapters 5 and 6 of Slaughterhouse-Five, pay attention to how Vonnegut foreshadows the impending catastrophe in Dresden. Also notice the childhood experiences that Billy revisits. What might these experiences reveal about Billy? How have they helped shape Billy into the person he is?
