Overview

Bienvenue à French I, First Semester! You are about to start an exciting adventure into the world of French language and francophone cultures. You will learn to speak, understand, read, and write elementary French. This course is equivalent to a first semester high school course. No previous knowledge of French is required or assumed.

You may have many different reasons for wanting to learn French. Perhaps you would like to travel to French-speaking countries such as Belgium or Canada; some of you might like to read French newspapers or understand French movies; maybe you are interested in learning more about the culture of French-speaking countries around the world; or, you may be studying French to fulfill the foreign language requirement at your school.

Whatever your reasons, you should start your French learning experience with an open mind and an enthusiastic attitude. You will discover many new aspects about language and culture in general.

We hope that you will find this course fun and interesting, however, it also will be challenging. Do not get discouraged if you find some of the material difficult; the purpose of the lessons is to lead you through the course material in the most organized and clear way possible. And, if you ever have questions the lessons don’t answer, you can always contact your instructor.
