Chemistry and Independent Study

If this is your first online course, welcome! If you have experienced this type of learning before, I hope your experience was a rewarding one. Science 31C is a course intended for students who have both an aptitude for and interest in chemistry. The concepts covered in this course and Science 32C (Chemistry: Second Semester) will give you a solid foundation in chemistry for any future chemistry course or career work.

Independent study courses require you to read, search, and learn independently. It is so very important that you keep in contact with your instructor. As you read the discussion section that is a part of each lesson, be sure to make comments and ask questions about items that were difficult for you. This practice will allow your instructor to better understand any problems you may be having. It will also give you a better understanding of the course.

The chemistry topics in this course will be covered in more depth and with greater stress on mathematical calculations than in an introductory chemistry course. At a minimum you should be prepared with excellent pre-algebra skills. Science 31C will also have an overall emphasis on developing your problem-solving skills.
