Presentation #5 Explorations of Our Region

Task

You will give a two-to-three minute PowerPoint presentation based on your life history interview from a resident in the Region. You have two options:

#1 Long-Time Resident, a person at least one generation older than you who has lived in the Region for a considerable number of years.
#2 Cultural Migrant

Your presentation will have four slides, to wit:

Slide #1 will give title of your project, your name, major, course name and date

The slide should look like this, depending on the option chosen:

Slide #2 will introduce the person you interviewed. What you include will depend on the option chosen.

For Option #1 include name, age, town of residence and number of years, occupation or career, how you know this person.
For Option #2 include name, age, country of origin, how long here occupation or career, how you know this person.

There is no need to reveal the person’s name if they wish it not to be disclosed. You might just give generalized identifiers, such as “a female resident of Hanmond for 37 years,” etc.

In terms of image possibilities you may use a picture of your subject if the person agrees, or else try displaying an image of the resident’s town or country of origin, or maybe a map showing location of the resident’s hometown or country of origin. These are suggestions; you can think of more to brighten up your slides.

Slide #3 covers the interview

For Option #1 pick two or three areas of change that interested you most, or else was emphasized by the interview subject. Remember, your interview explored economy, community life, politics, and cultural diversity.

For Option #2, cover how and why your subject came to the United States, the biggest challenges your subject faced and how your subject overcame those challenges, if at all. Be guided by what you found most interesting or what the subject emphasized the most during the interview.

Slide #4 is your reflection, how do you react to your subject’s perspective?

Remember when we discussed critical thinking skills, we emphasized that professors want you to do more than just reiterate, repeat information. A good presentation goes beyond the pure information and suggests how that information can be useful to improving society or else its consequences for the future. So think about what you learned from your interview subject and why it is important to you or the Region?

For Option #1 did you learn anything that makes you appreciate our life in the Region? Is there anything that displays the strengths of the Region that brings hope to our future? Or perhaps there are some areas our communities need to work on to make life better here.

For Option #2, think about the value of immigration to making the Region what it is today. Keep in mind the divisive national debate over immigration and how your interview may inform it for better or worse. Consider if immigrants bring fresh eyes to our everyday lives that can teach us new ways of living? Or think about how different would be the Region without the influx of immigrants to revitalize the Region.

Turn In

You will give your presentation twice. The first will be to our class on Thursday, Nov. 19, 2020. This will be a preparation for giving a revised presentation to the joint First-Year Student class of history professor Dr. David Parnell on Thursday, December 3, 2020.

Grading Guidelines

To be judged acceptable, you must be present a four-slide PowerPoint for the class, speak for at least two minutes, and meet the requirements described in the “Task” section. The only grade for assignments is acceptable or unacceptable.
