Leading Questions

Try to avoid leading questions. We want to keep the questions as open-ended as possible. This allows individuals to express their experience more freely.

Rather than say,

"Would you say that covid-19 has affected your financial security?"

Try,

"Has covid-19 had any effects on your finances?"

In the first example, the interviewer is trying to elicit a specific response. Depending on the interviewee, they may feel compelled to follow the lead of the interviewer. The second question, starts from the premise that covid-19 may or may not have had an impact on their finances. The question is open ended and is phrased in such a way that the interviewee is unlikely to give a simple yes or no.
