Practice: Lateral Reading (2)
Let's practice some lateral reading by engaging with a blog post from The Brookings Institution: "Should schools reopen? Balancing COVID-19 and learning loss for young children Links to an external site.."
If we learned one thing from John Green's video on lateral reading, we learned that we shouldn't immediately start reading the information if we don't know whether we can trust the information.
So, open the blog post in a separate window and let's ask some questions about it.
- What is The Brookings Institution? Are they trustworthy? How do we know?
"Brookings is a research group, or think tank (the oldest in the nation), that conducts research on economics, policy, and global issues. Experts in different policy areas conduct research and write reports for Brookings. It is sometimes viewed as liberal, but it is the most frequently cited think tank in the media and cited almost as often by conservative-leaning news outlets as liberal-leaning outlets."
