Instructions
This pre-test is not intended to assess your preparedness for the course. Instead, it is to get a baseline of your knowledge of the course's content.
"Wait!" you say, "Aren't we supposed to learn that stuff... in the course?"
Yes, and in fact I would expect most students to know no answers to these problems, and that is perfectly fine. You will receive full credit for just attempting the quiz, but if you know how to do one or more problems, please try your best. If you do not, there is no reason to wrack your brain trying to figure them out.
Do not use outside sources for this pre-test, as it would defeat the purpose. Also, please take this exam before starting §3.1, for the same reason. You must complete the pre-test no later than Saturday of Week 1. I have given two hours for this, in case someone has had the material before and really wants to work through the problems as best as they can. Again, to make sure it is understood, most students will not know how to do any of the problems, and will finish in a few minutes.
At the end of the semester, these problems should look, if not easy, at least very familiar!
