Human Rights (Fall 2022)
This course was built for law students at Indiana University's McKinney School of Law.
The course focuses on foundational concepts of human rights, with a heavy focus on international human rights law and the legal processes of human rights advocacy as opposed to social mobilization and political strategies.
Through a variety of learning activities, the course develops students' skills in sophisticated tactics for international human rights advocacy... and their own professional commitment to a social justice career.
The course is highly interactive, with students pursuing a personal passion project, and preparing many of the learning components as the course progresses. We also do a live simulation of a human rights treaty negotiation.
Although the course was designed for law students, most of it would be easily adapted for undergraduate students. Much of the course could be adapted for high-ability secondary students.
The course does not require a textbook. It relies entirely on publicly available materials.
Many of the readings are graduate-level in difficulty. In case your students are not ready to handle texts at that high level, the materials also incorporate video and journalistic components that may be sufficient.
