One way of thinking about the impact that white nationalism and other forms of extremism online has on schools and society is through the pyramid of hate developed by the Anti-Defamation League. The pyramid of hate shows us that as more "everyday" oppressive behaviors occur, situations become progressively worse for minoritized communities and individuals. At the same time, as one moves up the pyramid, the "lower" levels become more widespread and acceptable.
Much of the white nationalist and other extremist rhetoric online and in recruiting children focuses on making "biased attitudes" and "acts of bias" more acceptable so that discrimination and violence is more likely. Just think of the hateful speech and memes you may have encountered online towards different identities or communities. The levels of the pyramid, particularly biased attitudes, acts of bias, and discrimination have direct connections with experience for students.
Your job now is to identify what these three levels look like for students in schools, in the classroom and online. Provide 2-3 concrete examples each for:
- Biased Attitudes
- Acts of Bias
- Discrimination
