Code of Student Rights, Responsibilities, and Conduct
What does it mean to be an IU student?
As an IU Columbus student you are entitled to respect and civility, and also have responsibilities to the campus community. The Code of Student Rights, Responsibilities, and Conduct outlines your responsibilities and the university’s expectations for your behavior as an IU student.
A student who accepts admission to Indiana University Columbus agrees to:
- be ethical in their participation in the academic community
- take responsibility for what they say and do
- behave in a manner that is respectful of the dignity of others, treating others with civility and understanding
- use university resources and facilities in appropriate ways consistent with their purpose and in accordance with applicable polices.
The following are prohibited under IU policy
- Disorderly conduct, including obstructive and disruptive behavior that interferes with teaching, research, administration, or other university or university-authorized activity.
- Failure to comply with the directions of authorized university officials in the performance of their duties, including failure to identify oneself when requested to do so; failure to comply with the terms of a disciplinary sanction; or refusal to vacate a university facility when directed to do so.
- Possession of any weapon or potential weapon on any university property contrary to law or university policy; possession or display of any firearm on university property, except in the course of an authorized activity.
- Harassment, including sexual harassment
- Stalking or hazing
- Physical abuse
- Verbal abuse
IU is a tobacco-free university
Under IU's tobacco-free policy, the use or sale of tobacco products — cigarettes, cigars, chewing tobacco, snuff, e-cigarettes/vaping — is prohibited on university-owned, operated or leased property or vehicles owned or leased by the university.
