How is financial aid determined?
All financial aid is initially estimated because it’s based on the information available at that particular time. Funds are not guaranteed until all eligibility criteria have been reviewed. The amount you are awarded depends on:
- Your FAFSA data
- Your expected total costs for the school year
- Where you plan to live while you're in school (with your parents, on campus or off campus)
- How many credit hours you are taking
- Your degree program
In order to be eligible for most financial aid, including loans, you need to be enrolled at least half-time (6 credit hours per semester). Some awards, such as the State of Indiana Frank O’Bannon Grant and 21st Century Scholarship, require you to be enrolled full time. If you have one of these awards, you'll need to complete 30 credits to get it again, next year, so plan to enroll in at least 15 credits each term. This will also keep you on track to graduate in four years.
Accepting financial aid
If you were offered loans, you must accept (or reduce) them at One.IU by going to your Student Center Links to an external site. and clicking "Accept/Decline Awards." You’ll be offered the most you can get, but you choose how much to take, if any. To minimize your debt, accept only what you really need to cover your costs. To reduce a loan, click "Accept" then enter the amount you need.
If your financial aid package includes state or federal grants, you don’t need to do anything else to receive them. If you continue to meet the eligibility criteria for those awards, funds will disburse (credit) to your university account. Depending on the campus you will attend and the type of aid offered, you might also need to accept some scholarships or Federal Work-Study if you qualify and want to find a job on campus. Look at each item to see if it needs to be accepted.
