Divergently explore and communicate different representations of a word using the modes of icon, index, and symbol.

Project Detail

In this project, you will select a word from the list below and create a total of 96 representations of that word, arranged in a 24x36 poster using the template provided. You will explore 3 different semiotic modes of representation: Icon, Index, and Symbol, and generate 32 concepts for each of those classifications.

You may use type, image, or any combination of the two. You will be limited to only using 10 'found' images per category, and you will need to develop a credit list to accompany your poster.

Here are the constraints for the project:

Designs can be created in any creative software (Adobe, Procreate, etc.) but must be able to make their way into InDesign
The squares for each composition are 2.2in x 2.2in
You must use the template provided: HER-V210 - The 96 - Template Folder.zip
You may only use up to 10 found images per mode (Icon, Index, Symbol)
You must include the sources from found images in the credit list
You may use type, image, vector illustration or any combination of the three

3 Types of Signifiers — The Categories of Signs

The form a sign takes, it’s signifier, can be classified as one of three types: an icon, an index, or a symbol.

An Icon has a physical resemblance to the signified, the thing being represented. A photograph is a good example as it certainly resembles whatever it depicts.
An Index shows evidence of what’s being represented. A good example is using an image of smoke to indicate fire.
A Symbol has no resemblance between the signifier and the signified. The connection between them must be culturally learned. Numbers and alphabets are good examples. There’s nothing inherent in the number 9 to indicate what it represents. It must be culturally learned.

Grades

You will receive complete/incomplete for each of the 48 explorations for Icon, Index, and Symbol, as well as a grade for the final submission of your poster.
