Globally Focused Objectives
Global Voices Speakers can help faculty address a wide range of globally-focused learning objectives, including those represented in the Dimensions of Global Learning, the SDGs, and the IU Indianapolis Profiles of Learning for Undergraduate Success.
In the case of the first-year seminar, the instructor implemented a reading assignment that fostered learning about another community, their values, beliefs, and challenges, allowing for comparative self-reflection and sharing. The specific Dimensions of Global Learning addressed were: to encourage students to analyze their own beliefs, values, assumptions, experiences, and/or communication styles in respect to those of at least one other culture and to practice intercultural communication with the intent of cultivating respectful and productive collaboration, dialogue, and engagement with others.
Audience
Learning activities that include engagement with IU’s multicultural community can be tailored to students of any level.
Class Size
This activity is recommend for classes of 5-30 students, with potentially deeper connections as an outcome for smaller groups.
Mode of Instruction
Modality of the class is flexible. Face-to-face meetings, whether in person or virtual, are helpful for meaningful discussion.
