This module addresses the following intercultural communication objectives:
- Students will identify cultural perspectives during a conversation and analyze how to adjust the direction of the conversation accordingly.
- Students will apply intercultural knowledge in demonstrating respect via linguistic register, body language and listening skills in simulated workplace conversations.
- Students will demonstrate communication strategies that acknowledge diverse traditional beliefs in the contexts of healthcare conversations about medical treatments and medications.
Audience
These strategies work in advanced classes in healthcare professions, business, and other disciplines at the undergraduate level. They are also applicable to graduate level or professional level students, e.g., those in Master’s degree programs, Medical School, BSN to MSN or Nurse Practitioner classes, programs in occupational and physical therapy, dentistry, mental health and social work, etc. In addition, the strategies may be integrated into second language acquisition courses (for any world languages) at any level.
Class Size
The activities described here have been used for classes of 25 to 30 students. They may be adapted for smaller or larger classes.
Mode of Instruction
The strategies have worked with asynchronous, online classes that use small group zoom chats and projects. They will also work well with in-person, synchronous groups, or with hybrid courses.
