Screen Readers and Math

Screen readers must transform visual mathematical notation into either speech or braille output:

Format Detection: First, the screen reader must identify that it's encountering mathematical content
Parsing: It then interprets the structure of the expression
Rendering: Finally, it converts the math into speech or sends it to a refreshable braille display

For this process to work properly, mathematical content must be in an accessible format, most commonly MathML, which provides the semantic structure needed for proper interpretation.
