Jim Oehmke, PhD

James Oehmke is a health and development economist who seeks to generate policy-relevant research innovations and scholarship.  His passion is to inform public and private policy and resource allocation decisions with valid data and objective analysis. James’s latest projects include creating global and local dashboards and statistical and AI models of the relationships between climate and ecosystem and human health, statistically validating the use of novel contagion metrics and econometrics for contagion surveillance at the zip code level in New Jersey, statistically validating the use of contagion-like models for application to non-communicable diseases that are nonetheless “transmitted” through socio-economic vectors, and prototyping a fully regenerative food and nutrition system. James is currently Professor and Chair of Agricultural, Food, and Resource Economics and Director of Economic Development for the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences at Rutgers University. 

He is Professor Emeritus of Agricultural, Food, and Resource Economics at Michigan State University; and has previously served as Senior Policy Analyst and Acting Director of the Office of Policy, Analytics and Engagement at the U.S. Agency for International Development; and as CEO of the George Morris Centre for Agricultural Policy in Canada.  James earned a B.A. in Mathematics and Economics from Yale University and his M.A. and Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Chicago.
