Instagram stories are an Instagram feature that allows users to post photos and videos that, similar to Snapchat stories, disappear in just 24 hours.
Creating a story on Instagram is easy. Users just have to touch the plus sign icon in the upper left corner of the page, which will open the history camera. From there, you can take a photo or video directly in the application or add a photo or video from your phone's photo library.
The photos and videos taken with the history camera will automatically adjust to the dimensions of the Instagram story. The photos and videos in your photo gallery, however, may need to be adjusted (but we'll get to that later).
Unlike typical Instagram posts, Instagram stories will not appear in the feed, on the browsing page or in an account profile grid.
Instead, a colorful ring around the profile image of an account indicates that they have posted an Instagram story. To view the story, simply click on the profile picture and the story will open in full screen. If the account has published more than one story in the last 24 hours, it will automatically play in chronological order.
As they usually do with the most popular features, Instagram regularly updates Instagram stories to offer new and improved functionality. For example, users can add their location, tag other accounts, add hashtags, gifs and much more to their Instagram stories.
In addition, Instagram recently launched interactive Instagram stories - an especially exciting feature for social media marketing pros. This fun feature allows the poster to add a survey or ask a question that viewers can also send responses. For marketing professionals, this can be a creative and effective way to listen to the people who matter most: their customers.
Now that we have an understanding of Instagram stories and why sellers love them, let's get to the good: the dimensions of the story and why they are important.
Why the dimensions of the Instagram story are important
The Instagram story dimensions are 1080px wide by 1920px high. Photos and videos of portraits taken on your smartphone will be 1080 pixels wide and 1,920 pixels high, while other photos and videos must be reformatted to fit these dimensions. This is also known as an aspect ratio of 9:16.
I know ... this seems very picky. Does it really matter if the Instagram story does not fit these predetermined dimensions?
In a word, yes. There is a sure way to make sure your Instagram story looks the best you can, and all you have to do is make sure you're taking vertical photos and videos.
Vertical videos? Isn't this what they always told us not to do?
It probably was. I tell you to forget that. Video marketing statistics support this claim: more than half of all video views are made on mobile devices. Since Instagram is primarily a mobile platform, vertical photos and videos are the keys. In addition, the new facets of Instagram like IGTV, or Instagram TV, only allow vertical video, so it is clear that the application is moving in a vertical direction.
Therefore, let's review: the dimensions of the Instagram story are 1080px wide by 1920px high. That combination will fit your screen and give you the best possible resolution. However, since this is a 9:16 ratio, there are some other sizes that will work, depending on your goals and expectations.
For example, a photo or video 720px wide by 1280px high is slightly smaller than the standard dimensions of the Instagram story. This will still appear as HD, but it will have a slightly faster charging time. To take this one step further, a photo 450px wide by 800px high will have a much faster loading time. However, that is the size at which you will begin to lose the quality of your photos or videos, so be careful.
