Colonialism and Indigenous Sovereignty
Indigenous peoples collectively survived genocide, resisted colonizers, challenged racist ideologies, and secured international recognition of their sovereignty through treaties between 1500 and 2010. This course investigates the ways Indigenous peoples have defined distinctive notions of autonomy and self-determination while also forging alliances throughout the world to safeguard lands, laws, languages, and ecosystems in their territories, culminating in the 2007 United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
