F497 Advanced Seminar, Fall 2018
This seminar is designed for students interested in the study of expressive culture. The course will introduce theories and methods for studying artistic forms in their historical and social contexts and their roles in daily life. We will explore the ways people use expressive culture and the arts as forms of communication to express their ideas and identities in settings ranging from face-to-face and online communities to museums, cultural heritage projects, or educational programs. We also will discuss strategies for the future, including graduate school applications, internships, and career opportunities. The bulk of the semester's work will be specific to each student's individual interests and future plans. Each student will 1) complete a research paper or public project based on his/her own interests and design; and 2) a portfolio of their work to date, with an eye toward future educational and career plans. Class members will meet together in a seminar setting to discuss projects, portfolios, resumes, and relevant theories and methods. And they will work in collaboration to support and improve upon their work.
