Welcome to R110, Fundamentals of Speech Communication!

My name is Angela Sisson, and I am from the Department of Communication Studies. I will serve as your instructor for this course. I am excited to offer the basic public speaking course online again this semester. I have been teaching this course for IUPUI since 2007.

In this course, we will learn more about human communication in the form of rhetoric and public address. Essentially, this course helps you understand - and strengthen - your communication skills via public speaking and critical thinking. After completing this course, you should be able to have more experience creating speeches and presenting in front of groups.

The quote by Dale Carnegie above symbolizes this class in its entirety. In life you can present three different speeches depending on how much effort you put into practicing the delivery of the speech. This course will give you an opportunity to write several speech outlines and practice delivering the speeches. Practice, Practice and more Practice.

There are three basic course work format components, and each has work/assignments associated with it.

1. Live online meetings and speech deliveries in Adobe Connect;
2. Asynchronous online discussions and posts, as well as asynchronous lectures to view in Adobe Connect
3. Complementary assignments, samples, and testing tools in Canvas and the aforementioned tools (for example, you may have online meetings with mentors from the Speaker’s Lab).

Look over the site and identify questions or concerns early.  This class requires the commitment of daily to near-daily work, so manage your calendar carefully.
