I am participating in a workshop being run by the Center for Innovative Teaching and Learning. As part of this workshop, I have a piece of homework: To design an innovative way of assessing a learning outcome for my class. This assignment will help me do this assessment, and so improve the class.
INSTRUCTIONS
Please read the following story about Leon Trotsky.
After reading, please pretend you are Leon Trotsky.
It is 1926. You are a member of the Politburo of the Soviet Union. It is the highest government agency of the country. Today, you had a long and difficult Politburo meeting. Josef Stalin is trying to kick you out. He and his allies kept saying things that made you and your allies look like traitors and fools. You had to defend yourself.
You need to stay alive politically, because if you don't, Stalin will kill you for real. But to stay alive politically, you need to keep some power. You need to stay in the Politburo. And that is getting harder and harder to do.
The day is over. Now, open your diary and write a description of how you feel. Your diary entry should be no more than a paragraph long. How does it feel to be Leon Trotsky, fighting for his life in the Politburo?
