PART ONE Heart Disease
- Class Activity (Examine your hands) Heart Disease Warning Signs on the Hands:
There are three main areas of the hands that can show warning signs of potential heart disease:
-
Fingernails- The fingernails can take a white or even blue color, showing circulation problems. The "moons" at the base of the nails can become too large from over-action of the heart, or the "moons" can disappear entirely from weak action of the heart.
-
Line of Heart- A clean and deep line of heart is optimum. Heart disease can be indicated when this line is very faint or poorly formed, or when the color changes to dark red or pale white.
- Mount of Venus- The base of the thumb can turn a blue color from poor action of the heart. The veins become more visible with this color change.

These six heart attack symptoms are common in women:
- Chest pain or discomfort.Chest pain is the most common heart attack symptom, but some women may experience it differently than men. It may feel like a squeezing or fullness, and the pain can be anywhere in the chest, not just on the left side. It's usually "truly uncomfortable" during a heart attack, says cardiologist Rita Redberg, MD, director of Women’s Cardiovascular Services at the University of California, San Francisco. "It feels like a vise being tightened."
- Pain in your arm(s), back, neck, or jaw. This type of pain is more common in women than in men. It may confuse women who expect their pain to be focused on their chest and left arm, not their back or jaw. The pain can be gradual or sudden, and it may wax and wane before becoming intense. If you're asleep, it may wake you up. You should report any "not typical or unexplained" symptoms in any part of your body above your waist to your doctor or other health care provider, says cardiologist C. Noel Bairey Merz, MD, director of the Barbra Streisand Women's Heart Center at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.
- Stomach pain. Sometimes people mistake stomach pain that signals a heart attack with heartburn, the flu, or a stomach ulcer. Other times, women experience severe abdominal pressure that feels like an elephant sitting on your stomach, says cardiologist Nieca Goldberg, MD, medical director of the Joan H. Tisch Center for Women’s Health at NYU Langone Medical Center in New York.
- Shortness of breath, nausea, or lightheadedness. If you're having trouble breathing for no apparent reason, you could be having a heart attack, especially if you're also having one or more other symptoms. "It can feel like you have run a marathon, but you didn't make a move," Goldberg says.
- Breaking out in a nervous, cold sweat is common among women who are having a heart attack. It will feel more like stress-related sweating than perspiration from exercising or spending time outside in the heat. "Get it checked out" if you don't typically sweat like that and there is no other reason for it, such as heat or hot flashes, Bairey Merz says.
- Some women who have heart attacks feel extremely tired, even if they've been sitting still for a while or haven't moved much. "Patients often complain of a tiredness in the chest," Goldberg says. "They say that they can't do simple activities, like walk to the bathroom."
Not everyone gets all of those symptoms. If you have chest discomfort, especially if you also have one or more of the other signs, call 911 immediately.
Heart Attack symptoms in Men
Lecture: The Physics of a Heart Attack
Tidal Volume (as veins degrade there elastic quality decreases. When exercise causes blood volume to increase, the vein ruptures.(Heart attack and stroke)
Critical Mass (Shoveling snow in the winter, opening a window in the Spring, straining on the stool)***Massive Heart failure
Cell death (The walls of the heart die) Heart failure (Lack of oxygen)
Heart Contraction-Caused by high fat stores around the heart.
Electrical failure (The electrical signals to the heart decrease or speed up).(Drug induced Heart Attacks and strokes) (Heart attacks cause by physical, electrical shock and emotional shock)
Blocked arteries (Blood clots) Stroke and Heart attack (High fat diet/ High salt intake)
Congenetal Defects (Parts of the heart missing or malformed) Massive heart attack of young athletes (Over 6 ft tall-250 pounds)
- Class Activity
Simple tests you can do:
True Resting rate (When you awake)
Active resting rate (When your body is at rest.)
Working Heart Rate (Take your pulse after being active for 20-30 minutes)
Training Heart Rate (Take your pulse after training at your THR for 20 minutes)
Excessive and dangerous heart rates (Heart rate after or during exercise that suddenly moves above youor THR)***This may happen after you do a flight of stairs.
Know your resting heart rate
Know your working heart rate (Rate during normal activity)
Know your training heart rate (220-age x .70)
Workout for 5 minutes at your training heart rate
Measure your BPM by taking your pulse
Wait one minute and take your pulse again
Wait two minutes and take your pulse again.
Continue to take pulse readings until your pulse returns to it's normal rate.
Rule: The faster your heart returns to a normal pulse rate the healthier your heart.
Rule: The lower your heart rate is when measured as a true resting rate, the healthier your heart.
Rule: Training will drop your resting rate while increasing your working or training weight.
Dangererous symptoms of heart disease during exercise. See your doctor immediately.

- .Question to the class------------> What are universal precautions? Why are they necessary?
-
wash hands
Links to an external site.before and after each medical procedure (may use a waterless hand cleaner)
- wear gloves whenever there is a possiblity of coming in contact with blood or other potentially infectious materials (body fluids and tissues)
- wear full-body gowns whenever there is a possibility of blood splashing onto the rescuer
- wear face masks and eye protection whenever there is a possibility of blood splashing into the rescuer's face
- dispose of all contaminated sharp objects in an appropriate puncture-proof container
- dispose of all contaminated personal protective equipment in an appropriate container marked for bio-hazardous waste
Lay rescuers should consider following universal precautions as much as possible. To adequately follow universal precautions, a rescuer must have appropriate personal protective euipment Links to an external site. available.
