Illegal immigration and international travel have introduced eradicated and new diseases in the United States.
As children most of you were immunized against measles, mumps, rubella (whooping cough), polio and diphtheria. Before you entered the university you were required to receive a meningitis vaccination. As we age it is common for Americans to be vaccinated for TB (tuberculosis), pneumonia, influenza, tetanus and genital herpes. These immunizations have saved countless lives and eradicated diseases that once killed thousands of our citizens. Now we face a new age of disease transmission that is bringing new strains of eradicated diseases and new diseases into our country. Some of these diseases can be controlled by immunization programs and a renewed willingness to be immunized. Other diseases will require constant vigilance at all points of entry into the United States because we do not have drugs that will cure those infected.
Your assignment:
- Research the subjects of old and new diseases that are entering the United States.
- List three references for each. Old and New
- Discuss your findings for each.
- Do we need new laws to stop the spread of these diseases? Give examples.
- How can you protect yourself and the members of your family from these diseases?
