Body Image
One major source of inner conflict is the idea of body image. American media culture promotes the ideal of the perfect self with TV images, print journalism, e-media, and numerous forms of mass communication. Every hour of our day is inundated with subliminal messages to buy the right clothes, make up, and hair products because “you’re worth it”.
In schools, our children classify their friends based on popularity norms. Our industry and business owners hire the tall and the beautiful rather than the over-weight or the plain looking worker. Our society has become fixated on idealized standards that are almost impossible for the average person to reach.
Signs of body image health problems are everywhere. We spend too much money on beauty treatments, clothes, cars, homes and products endorsed by our ideal person. We obsess on images of “perfect” people like the Kardashians, elite athletes, actors, musical artists and fashion models. And, ultimately, we suffer depression and self-loathing because we just cannot make our body “perfect”.
The following video was produced by a woman who was fed up with our artificial body image standards. Please watch the video and take a few minutes to discuss the concept of a healthy body image. You may vent your frustration and experiences with body image issues but be sure to include at least one reference from an outside source.
