Interprofessional Case for Panel Discussion Revised
(The case is written for either a male or female actor who is age 50 or above.)
James/Jane is a 50+ male/female who was admitted to the hospital for elective right total knee replacement. The patient has a history of severe osteoarthritis in the knees and had knee replacement yesterday because she experiences terrible pain in her knees, right worse than left, for about the last few years. The pain has been debilitating to the point where she cannot climb stairs, nor walk for exercise. Characteristics of the pain include the following: intense aching, 10/10 in severity with walking, helped by sitting, radiation down the leg, worst pain she has ever experienced.
Today is the first day after surgery and she has been up walking in the halls with assistance of physical therapy. She has pain, but it is managed by the Morphine she is receiving IV.
Other medications
Hydrochlorothiazide 25mg daily for high blood pressure
No known drug allergies
No prior surgeries or hospitalizations
Never married and no children
She works as an administrative assistant for a law firm
Sexually active practicing safe sex
Does not, nor never has drank, used drugs, or smoked
Her surgical wound intact without evidence of infection and is healing nicely.
The team is meeting today to discuss her care during the hospitalization as well as discharge planning.
Interprofessional Case for Small Group Discussions
James/Jane is three months post knee replacement. She is doing well. She is back to work and does not need the narcotics. She infrequently takes acetaminophen if she has pain. She has resumed driving. She has completed physical therapy and continues to exercise to strengthen her new knee. She walks two blocks in her neighborhood four days a week.
The only medication (other than infrequent acetaminophen that she continues to take) is hydrochlorothiazide daily for her blood pressure.
