Office Hours: Tuesday 4:30pm-5:30pm, Thursday 4:30pm-5:30pm, Friday 9-10am.
Important dates: Last day for automatic withdrawals is Sunday, October 23.

Exam 1: Thursday, September 15, 5:45-7pm in class, RH100.

The common midterm exam: Saturday, October 15 from 8-9:30 am - room TBA.

Exam 3: Thursday, November 17 5:45-7pm in class, RH100.

The common final exam: Wednesday, December 14 from 2:45-4:45 pm -room TBA.

Make-ups are almost NEVER allowed. I will not drop any of the four exams. If you think you have to miss an exam due to conditions not under your control, you must notify me in advance (well before the exam) to discuss your option(s). In case of sickness, complete doctor’s documentation is required.  If you have a schedule conflict, you must discuss it with your instructor as soon as possible and bring documentation, as appropriate to the situation. No one will be allowed to take any exams earlier, regardless of the circumstances.

Announcements and class information: Official course announcements will be made through Canvas. You are required to set your Canvas notifications so that your receive these announcements. Failure to do so will not be considered a legitimate excuse for missing assignments or any other thing that might be announced via Canvas. Go to Account -> Notifications and set Announcements to be received immediately. 

Calculators: No calculators are allowed on the exams for this course. 

Homework: The graded homework in this course will be done through the online homework system WebWork. Students who do not have access to a personal computer should plan to work their WebWork assignments from a Student Technology Center (STC) on campus. Usually, you will have 2 assignments each week due 2 times a week: an assignment opened on Tuesday will be due on Friday and an assignment opened on Thursday will be due on Tuesday. Due time will always be 5:30PM. I will not extend the due dates of the WeBWorK assignments, however I will drop the lowest 3 WeBWorK scores at semester’s end.

For WeBWorK related questions, please use the ”Email instructor” button attached to each problem. Keep in mind that answering questions by email might be difficult and I do not promise you’ll always get an answer. I strongly encourage you to come to the office hours and make good use of the Departmental Help Sessions.

Additional, suggested problems are recommended and included as ungraded homework assignments. 

Academic Misconduct: The Department of Mathematics expects its students to comply fully with Indiana University policies on academic integrity. The Penalties for a student caught cheating in M118 may include a final course grade of F* (the star tells the registrar that the F is due to cheating) along with probation, suspension, or expulsion from the University. Academic misconduct will be reported to the Office of Student Ethics. Religious Holiday Policy: If you will miss class, especially a class during which there will be an exam or other required work, for a religious holiday, you must inform me during the first two weeks of the semester. Resources: You should begin your homework as soon as possible after the lecture it is assigned. If you have difficulties, you have many resources available to help you. 

Departmental Help Sessions: 4:00-6:00 pm on MTWR in Swain East 340, and free tutoring available at the Academic Support Centers in the dorms from 7-11 Sunday-Thursday.

Grades: Your course grade will be computed using the following weights listed below and at the side of this page. 

 Exam 1: 17%, Midterm 22%, Exam 3: 18%, Final: 28%, WeBWorK: 15%

Students disputing a grade must do so within a week of its being posted in the gradebook. There is no extra credit available in this class.

Time expectations: Expect to spend at least 8 hours per week preparing for this class, though this might need to be increased significantly depending on things like your background, intensity of your study, etc.

Special Services: Students needing accommodations because of a disability must first register with Disability Services for Students and provide me with the appropriate forms issued by DSS before accom- modations may be given. The assessment and registration process can be time-consuming, especially near midterms. If you believe you may qualify for accommodations, you should consult with DSS as soon as possible. Students are expected to provide their instructors with at least 1-2 weeks advance notice to arrange appropriate exam accommodations.
