Have you ever wondered what best practices exist for examining the quality of online courses?
Quality Matters (QM), a faculty-centered peer review process, uses a set of standards to help faculty determine the quality of online and blended course design.
There are three primary components of the QM Program:
- The QM Rubric Links to an external site.
- The Course Review Process Links to an external site.
- QM Professional Development Links to an external site.
The focus of this institute is to introduce you to the standards on the QM rubric Download QM rubric that you will later use as a guide for determining the quality of your online or blended courses.
Two to three weeks before you teach your course for the first time, you will be asked to complete a Self-Review based on a shortened version of the complete QM Rubric. The Self-Review will be conducted online but the rubric and annotations that you will use for your reference as you develop your course are available below,.

Additional Quality Matters Training Opportunities:
Quality Matters: Applying the Standards at IU (aka: APPQMR Workshop) - Applying the Quality Matters Rubric Links to an external site.
While the course development institute provides a basic introduction to Quality Matters principles, UCET also offers an on-campus free-of-charge workshop developed by Quality Matters. Participants will identify the critical elements of the QM rubric and receive practice opportunities to apply the QM rubric to an online course. After completing the workshop, participants receive a APPQMR certificate.
PRC - Peer Reviewer Course Links to an external site.
Participants who complete the APPQMR workshop are eligible to participate in QM's peer reviewer course - an in-depth practice in reviewing online courses. Upon successful completion of the PRC, participants may apply to become a certified QM Peer Reviewer provided that they have taught a for-credit online course within the last 18 months and have an individual or institution subscription.
