💼 Notes for instructors, group assignment

In this example, students submit the final drafts of their group assignment as a manual they can export and take with them when the class is over. When the students have submitted the final drafts of their assignment the text is also made public, allowing them to send a link to the text to anyone they wish to share it with.

 

This assignment assumes the following:

  • Student groups have been created in Canvas and each group has been assigned certain chapters to write (in this case, different grade levels).
  • Each group has assigned one of its members to be an editor. The editors from each group will move the final drafts of the chapters into Pressbooks and ensure that there is design consistency between the sections. Once the editors have finished working on the text, they will export it to PDF and submit the document for grading.

 

 

 

To set up a text for this kind of assignment:

  1. Set up an assignment requiring your students to log into pressbooks.iu.edu. You will not be able to add them to the class text until they've logged in at least once.

    1. Create a new text in Pressbooks. If this is your first time using Pressbooks, see Log in and create your first text Links to an external site.. If you've ever had access to a text in Pressbooks, instead log into pressbooks.iu.edu Links to an external site. and hover over a button reading "my catalog" (My Catalog) in the top left corner (you may need to click My Books first). Click Create A New Book and follow the instructions to create your class book.

     

    1. From your new book's dashboard, click Users in the left-side menu.

     

    1. Click Add Existing.

     

    1. Enter your student's email address in the format username@iu.edu (not @iupui.edu, @indiana.edu, etc.) and select the Author role from the drop-down. Click Add Existing User.

     

    1. Repeat for your additional students.

     

    Adding your students as Editors will allow them to edit the text's content and organization but they won't be able to add or edit users. Once your students have been added they will be able to create the manual as described here. While each copy of the manual should be identical, each group's editor should submit a copy for their group to enable easy grading in Canvas.
