 Note

The texts in this course are made public for the sake of example: they could also be made private to the course.

In this example, student groups identify content in their eText ahead of exams and build study guides together. The study guides are submitted in Canvas for instructor feedback, allowing the instructor to determine which content the students are identifying as interesting or important to study. In building the study guides, students are given an opportunity to take on the role of 'teacher'/content creator, and thus learn the course content in a more impactful way.

This assignment assumes the following:

  • Student groups have been created in Canvas and each group has been asked to build one study guide per chapter (in this example, chapter 14 section 5 of a psychology text).
  • The assignment is ungraded: the instructor provides feedback in the form of suggested edits (corrections, recommended additions, etc.) instead. This allows the instructor to evaluate whether students are identifying the appropriate content for study and gives the students an opportunity to collaboratively learn by teaching (i.e., by building their own teaching content).

To set up a text for this kind of assignment:

  1. Set up an assignment requiring your students to log into pressbooks.iu.edu. You will not be able to add them to the class text until they've logged in at least once.

     See an example assignment here.

    1. In Canvas, create an assignment describing how each group can create their study guide manual and add the rest of the group.

     See an example assignment here.

    1. In Canvas, create an assignment for each chapter the student groups should be submitting a study guide for.

     See an example assignment here.

    1. Review the study guides and provide feedback to the students as to whether the guides cover relevant material, could be organized more effectively, etc.

    Note

The example study guide (found here: 14.5 The Pursuit of Happiness Links to an external site.) uses H5P activities which cannot be exported in bulk. If students wish to retain copies of their H5P activities, they may wish to enable downloading when they create their activities and download them as described in the "Exporting" section here: Importing and exporting Links to an external site..
