Office Hours:
Section : 2816
Prerequisite:
Two years of high school algebra or a preparatory math course such as M014 or M018.
In addition, it is strongly advised that prospective M118 students satisfy one of the following conditions:
- An ALEKS Math Placement Test Score of at least 50
- Or successfully complete Math M014 or Math M018
Course Description:
Sets, counting, basic probability, including random variables and expected values. Linear systems, matrices, linear programming, and applications. Credit is given only for one of M118, V118, or the sequence D116-D117.
In the College of Arts and Sciences, this course is considered as both a Mathematical Modeling and a Natural and Mathematical Sciences course. Learning outcomes for those courses are available at https://gened.indiana.edu/about/gened-learning-outcomes.html
Textbook:
Finite Mathematics, 6th edition by D. P. Maki, M. Thompson, and S. C. McKinley. The textbook is available through the IU and TIS bookstores.
Calculator Policy:
Calculators of any type will not be permitted on quizzes or exams. As much as possible, you should strive to complete the homework without the assistance of a calculator. However, there may be a few homework problems for which you need a calculator.
Attendance Policy:
Most students find the material in M118 to be significantly more difficult than their high school math classes. Attending and participating in every class is crucial to your success in this course. A student absent from class bears full responsibility for all material covered and announcements made in class. Missed quizzes and homework assignments, regardless of the circumstances, will not be accepted late and cannot be made up. Instead, a few of the lowest scores from each type of assignment, quiz and homework, will be dropped at the end of the semester. See quiz and homework sections for more detail.
No Class:
Independence Day - Thursday, July 4
Academic Integrity:
The IU Department of Mathematics takes academic integrity very seriously. The usual penalty for a student caught cheating includes an F in the course. Further penalties may include probation, suspension, or expulsion from the university.
Student Misconduct:
The IU Department of Mathematics expects all students to adhere to the regulations put forth in the “IU Code of Student Rights, Responsibilities, and Conduct” concerning academic misconduct or personal misconduct. Procedures for imposing academic and disciplinary sanctions are outlined in the Code, which can be found at http://www.iu.edu/~code/code/index.shtml
Cell Phones & Pagers:
Please turn these off or set them on silent mode. The material is difficult enough without unnecessary interruptions.
WebPages:
The IU Department of Mathematics web page offers quick access to information about their courses and programs at http://www.math.indiana.edu
Information about M118 can be found on your course webpage inside canvas at https://canvas.iu.edu/lms-prd/app
Communication:
The best way to contact your instructor is by email from your IU email account. To protect your confidentiality, as a matter of policy, students are expected to use the IU email system rather than another email server. You are also expected to check the class canvas site daily for announcements and to read any email sent from our class canvas site.
Help Outsides of Class:
There will not be enough time in class to answer all questions from the homework assignments, tests, etc. Several options for help outside of class are available.
- You can visit your instructor during their office hours.
- The Finite Show: See the Tools page of your M118 Canvas page for this highly informative and entertaining resource.
- Math help is available in the Math Learning Center (MLC). The MLC is located in Swain East 340 and starting Monday, June 17, will be open 10 am – 5 pm, Monday through Friday. To find out more about the MLC tutoring schedule and other general information, please visit the MLC web page at https://math.indiana.edu/undergraduate/MLC.html
- Private tutors are available and usually charge $30-80/hour for individual tutoring. To view a list of recommended tutors please visit http://www.math.indiana.edu/undergraduate/tutors.phtml
Homework:
To do well in this class, you should expect to spend at least three hours for each class working problems and reading the sections as they are discussed in class.
Homework will be done online using the web-based homework system called “WebWorks”. You will have one assignment for each of the 26 sections covered. You can expect to typically have 5-10 homework assignments due each week. To access the webworks assignments, log onto your M118 class canvas page, click on the WebWorks tab in the left margin.
Missed homework assignments, regardless of the circumstances, will not be accepted late and cannot be made up. Instead, an optional review assignment will be given at the end of the semester which can be completed to make up for some missed homework problems.
It is your responsibility to find a computer with the necessary software to access the WebWork System. Homework extensions will only be granted for technical difficulties where the problem is with the WebWork system or the IU server, or if there is a local power outage. If you experience any technical problems you should call University Information Technology Services at 812.855.6789. If they are not able to help you resolve the issue, you should email your instructor and provide a summary of the issue. There are computers in the Math Learning Center and campus computer labs available for you to complete the homework.
Short Quizzes:
Quizzes will be given frequently, generally without prior announcement, and usually covering topics from the previous day(s). These quizzes will be very short, about 5-10 minutes, and may be given at the start, middle or end of class. Being absent for any portion of the time may result in your having little to no time for the day’s quiz.
Exam Dates:
Midterm: Chapters 1-4 11:00 am – 12:30 pm, Monday, July 8
Final Exam: Chapters 1-8 11:00 am -1:00 pm, Friday, July 26
The Midterm and Final exams will be given outside of class at a location to be announced.
Make-up exams are given only in extenuating circumstances such as medical emergencies.
If you have a schedule conflict, you are expected to discuss it with your instructor as soon as possible.
Grade Scale:
Grades are computed using the standard scale:
93% and 90% for grades of A and A-
87%, 83%, and 80% for grades of B+, B, and B-
77%, 73%, and 70% for grades of C+, C, and C-
67%, 63%, and 60% for grades of D+, D, and D-
Below 60% is an F
Assessment:
Grades will be determined using the scores from the following assignments:
Homework 15%
Quizzes 5%
Midterm 35%
Final Exam 45%
100%
Do not rely on a curve to be used on the exams. There will be NO extra credit available. Plan to do all assignments to the best of your ability.
Grades for M118 are determined solely by performance on the assignments and exams, rather than
apparent effort and situation. For example, someone needing a grade of a C- or better must earn an overall average of at least 70%.
Withdraw Deadlines:
Withdraw with an automatic grade of W – Tuesday, July 9
Withdraw with W or F – starts on Wednesday, July 10
Further information regarding schedule adjustment fees, refunds and deadlines can be found on the website of the Office of the Registrar: http://registrar.indiana.edu/official-calendar/official-calendar-summer.shtml?s=s6w

Information regarding DSS can be found at https://studentaffairs.indiana.edu/disability-services-students/
Religious Holiday Policy:
