Description

This course prepares graduate students to understand the principles of advanced pharmacology across the lifespan as it relates to advanced nursing practice.

Course Competencies

  1. Develop a foundation for professional clinical practice as it relates to the understanding of pharmacotherapeutics and prescriptive authority.
  2. Explain the principles of pharmacokinetics, pharmacotherapeutics, pharmocogenetics and pharmacodynamics across the lifespan.
  3. Determine major pharmacologic differences and indications of pharmacotherapeutic agents across and within drug classes for various clients across the lifespan.
  4. Select appropriate drug therapies and provide rationale for those choices, given specific clinical situations.
  5. Critically appraise new studies and evidence-based practices involving therapeutic agents for clinical practice across the lifespan.
  6. Describe the therapeutic use of major drug classifications for disease risk reduction, disease management, symptoms and functional problems across the lifespan.
  7. Integrate pharmacotherapeutics, current evidence based practice guidelines, and clinical expertise as related to advanced practice nursing.
  8. Explore the economic, legal and ethical implications of using pharmacotherapeutic agents across the lifespan.

Evaluation

All assignments and exams are expected to be turned in by the due date.  Students are expected to follow the course schedule and plan accordingly. 

To successfully pass the course, attainment of at least a B- is required.

  • Midterm Exam (50 points each)
  • Final Exam (50 points each)
  • 13 quizzes (1300 points total)           
  • 6 case studies (100 points each )
  • 1 discussion with peer response (pass/fail)

Academic Misconduct
