Spring 2025 Scheduling FAQs

Who is my advisor?

If you are a Psychology, Clinical Psychological Science, Organizational and Business Psychology, or Neuroscience major, your advisors are:

  • Chrissy Brown
  • AC Carlson
  • Rachel Crabtree
  • Kate Emblom
  • Sara Gibson
  • Matthew O'Donnell
  • Serena Ostrander

Please understand that appointments take priority over email, and we respond as soon as we are able. Please allow 24-48 hours for us to respond.

Assigned Advisors:  You may see an individual advisor name pop up under “Assigned Advisor,” or it may say “Psychological & Brain Sciences”. We encourage you to make an appointment with the specific advisor listed (if one appears); however, if you already have an existing relationship with an advisor in Psychological & Brain Sciences, or if the listed advisor is not available at a time that works for you, please feel free to schedule with one of the other advisors in our department (listed above). If no specific name appears, you may have had an advisor who moved to another position, in that case, feel free to meet with any of us listed above. We won't leave you hanging!

How do I make an appointment?

Please use the Student Appointment Scheduler Links to an external site. tool in One.IU.edu.  You can find our calendars by looking at your assigned assigned advising office and clicking that link or, search advisors by typing in keyword "Psychology" or "Neuroscience" to find our availability. Quick questions about future semesters or urgent concerns for the current semester can be sent to psyneuro@iu.edu. You can also search our drop in hours for more immediate assistance. If your question requires a review of your academic advisement report or a degree audit, we may request that you make an appointment.  Topics that may not be quick questions: What classes do I need?, I think I want to drop something..., Should I add a major/minor/certificate?

  • Advisor availability: Our appointments will fill quickly.  Some of us restrict our calendars according to class standing so during the busiest periods, you might not see open appointments until closer to your registration date.
  • Our appointment calendars are open 14 - 21 days an advance.  If it looks like there are no appointments - check 14 - 21 days out and refresh - more appointments will open daily.
  • If you cannot get an appointment before your registration date (appointments fill quickly), please register for your classes (DO NOT WAIT) and then schedule an appointment when available.  We can discuss adjustments to your courses at that time, but it is best to get your seat in the courses if you can.  You can use the CANVAS Registration Help: College of Arts and Sciences to assist you in finding your remaining requirements, and look up your specific requirements by checking your Academic Advisement Report Links to an external site., and the College of Arts and Sciences Bulletin Links to an external site.. You can also send quick questions to psyneuro@iu.edu.

I missed my appointment - what should I do?

If you anticipate missing your advising appointment, please cancel or let the advisor know right away, just so that another student may take your spot. Our calendars are full, so missed appointments, unfortunately, take slots away from other students. If you missed your appointment by mistake, please check our calendars for the soonest available opening. This may be 2-3 weeks from the day you are looking. We cannot offer full advising meetings via email or add students to our calendars on days when all slots are full. Please move forward with registering for your classes on time and then schedule a follow up appointment to discuss course adjustments if necessary.

I don't see any appointments at all - is the Student Appointment Scheduler broken?

Our advising calendars are restricted based on class standing, so if you are a beginning student, you will likely not see availability until 14 - 21 days in advance of your recommended advising week. If you have an urgent concern impacting your current classes, please email psyneuro@iu.edu to let us know that you need immediate assistance (even if we do not have openings, we will always try to help in urgent situations). If you have questions about Fall scheduling, here is the chart that we follow when setting up our calendars:

If you are looking at the Scheduler and the screen is blank, please exit/log out and clear cache or try a different browser. If all spots appear to be closed, they likely are since our calendars may get booked three weeks in advance. In that case, please check back daily.

I need to meet with an advisor but all advising appointments are full - how do I know which courses I still need to take?

We recommend meeting with an academic advisor for the best possible information about your remaining requirements. Please keep checking our online calendars, as new spots open daily. You can use the CANVAS Registration Help: College of Arts and Sciences to assist you in finding your remaining requirements, and look up your specific requirements by checking your Academic Advisement Report Links to an external site., and the College of Arts and Sciences Bulletin, Links to an external site. and then schedule an appointment when available.  If you cannot get in to meet with us, please register for classes (DO NOT WAIT) during your registration date and then setting up a follow up appointment at the earliest available time to review your choices. We can discuss adjustments to your courses at that time, if needed.

I want to change my major - what should I do?

If you are changing out of the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences, please meet with the advisor in your new intended major. Advisors can be found in the Student Appointment Scheduler Links to an external site. tool in One.IU.edu, search the major you are interested in.

Why is my PSY P457 course not showing up on the Academic Advisement Report?

PSY P457 courses are topical, which means that some topics are coded to automatically fall correctly on the Academic Advisement Report, and other topics may need to be manually placed in the correct spot by an advisor. This happens especially in the case of new topics that have not been offered before and in the case of Neuroscience based topics that must have PSY P346 as a pre-requisite to qualify. This placement cannot occur until a grade of C- or better is earned in the course, so it is normal for the Academic Advisement Report to look incorrect for a short period of time until the change is made. These are always caught during the final audit at graduation, but letting us know ahead of time is helpful as well so we appreciate you reaching out about these.

When can I register for classes?

In your Student Center in One.IU.edu, you have an assigned enrollment appointment that shows up about a month before the active registration period. This is not a physical appointment, but rather, the date when you are eligible to start enrolling in classes for the semester. Before then, you can begin to move classes from your iGPS and/or shopping cart to allow for enrollment. You can click "Validate" to make sure that you've met the pre-requisites for the courses you've chosen. You can also check your holds in the Student Center. Holds are markers on your record that could prevent registration. Some holds we can be flexible on and move for a semester, while others are not from our office and are held to stricter standards. For example, we do not have the ability to move immunization compliance holds. Similarly, a meeting is required for all academic probation holds. If you have a hold that is preventing registration, please reach out to psyneuro@iu.edu and we will try to assist if we can. Check your registration appointment Links to an external site. and see if you might have any holds Links to an external site..

Is registration help available?

Yes! Registration takes place on your own, but we have help available if it gets tricky.

  • Live Registration Help:

Need help registering for your classes or running into a permission issue? Try troubleshooting with our guide or join a virtual College Drop-In Advising session (https://iu.instructure.com/enroll/FN69TB) for questions and help navigating common registration issues.

Why isn't my registration date earlier?

Please keep in mind that your registration date and time is assigned by the number of credit hours you have completed (in progress courses do not count toward this calculation). If you have questions about your assigned date, please contact Student Central: https://studentcentral.indiana.edu/contact/index.html Links to an external site.

What is the English Composition hold?

If you are a beginning student who has not yet completed the English Composition requirement, a hold will be placed on your account until the requirement has been met. This hold can be temporarily moved to allow for registration once you have a plan in place for completing the requirement. These holds do sometimes populate after you've already met with an advisor, so if you see one that is impacting registration, email us at psyneuro@iu.edu and we will move it.

I have one of these holds and I am not sure what it means or what I need to do?

  • BL/V03
  • COLL Direct Admit-acad adv
  • COLL Transfer (ext)-acad adv
  • COLL Transfer (int)-acad adv

This is a mandatory academic advising hold.  Please make an appointment to meet with a major advisor as soon as possible.

I know I met the pre-requisite for a course but the system is not letting me register - what is happening?

Some courses have special holds or restrictions on them. Please use the validation step during registration and check the course notes to make sure that you are eligible to take the course(s).  Sometimes when students take introductory courses at another institution, or even another IU campus, the system has trouble recognizing the course as a pre-requisite. Advisors can override this by placing a permission in the system that will allow you to enroll. We try to process these requests as quickly as possible and appreciate your patience as we work through them. Please note that we can only process Psychology & Neuroscience course permissions. If you are having an issue with a Math or Spanish course, for example, you will need to reach out to the Department that offers the course. Another common issue we see is when students try to enroll in a course that is being held for a certain population - for example, a Hutton Honors course or one for Groups students. Please try to check the class notes of the section you are enrolling in to see if that may be the problem. You can also reach out to Student Central on Union Links to an external site. for help trouble shooting the issue. Please note that the Capstone/Lab courses will initially be available to seniors only.  You should be able to waitlist the courses if you are not a senior. Please email psyneuro@iu.edu with any questions.

How do I know if a class is an advanced course, elective, or capstone/lab?

Linked on the PBS Advising Canvas site is the list of the courses we are offering and the requirements they meet.

Why can't I see my course in Canvas?

Students cannot access the course site or receive course communications from the instructor until the course is published. If the course has not yet started or if it is a second 8 weeks course, it is likely that the instructor has not yet published the course. If the course has started and you still cannot access the Canvas site, please contact UITS Links to an external site.for assistance.
