Course Syllabus
Below you will see the syllabus for this class. In addition, please look over the attached "FALL 2020 M118 - Departmental Syllabus.pdf." This lays out policies that every section of M118 this semester will adhere to.
Finite Mathematics, M118
Section: 2500
Class Day and Times: MWF: 7:30-8:20 AM
Class Location: Canvas
Text: Finite Mathematics by Maki, Thompson, McKinley
Instructor: Kelvin Guilbault
Office Hours: You may email me to set up an appointment to meet by Zoom for office hours. I also plan to have scheduled “drop in” sessions where students join a meeting without any appointment. I will poll the class early on to decide the best time to schedule these. The nature of these sessions may be subject to change based on student demand. Up-to-date instructions on how to access office hours will be featured prominently on the course Canvas page.
Important dates:
- 8AM EDT, Saturday October 10: Midterm Exam
- Sunday, October 25: Last day to drop the course, receiving an automatic ‘W’. If you remain enrolled past this date you are committed to completing the course and will receive the letter grade you've earned, as dictated by the syllabus.
- 2:45 PM EST, Wednesday December 16: Final Exam
Announcements and class information: Official course announcements will be made through Canvas. You are required to set your Canvas notifications so that you receive these announcements. Failure to do so will not be considered a legitimate excuse for missing assignments or any other thing that might be announced via Canvas. Go to Account -> Notifications and set Announcements to be received immediately.
Calculators: A traditional handheld calculator will be allowed during exams. Although a specific make and model is not being recommended, we wish to assert that you should not spend much money on one. A solar powered scientific calculator with a one or two-line display will be more than sufficient. Non-traditional calculators such as a smart phone or watch, your computer, or such will not be allowed.
Homework: The graded homework in this course will be done through the online homework system WebWork, which will be accessed through the Canvas page. A new Webwork assignment will be assigned after most class meetings and must be completed before the due date. In general, assignments will be due according to the following schedule:
- Assignments given on Monday will be due Friday evening
- Assignments given on Wednesday will be due the following Monday evening
- Assignments given on Friday will be due the following Friday evening.
There may be slight alterations to this based on the class schedule! These due dates will always be announced and will be visible on the Webwork page. It is your responsibility to keep track of when each assignment will be due
Late Homework: Because the webwork is computerized, you cannot for any reason submit homework after the deadline! Over the course of the semester, many students will have legitimate reasons for missing an assignment. For this reason, at the end of the semester the lowest 10% of your webwork score will be dropped (i.e. if there are for example 100 total points available, your grade will be counted out of 90 instead). This adjustment is not extra credit and will not raise your score above 100%. This is meant to make up for missed work. If you email me asking for a homework extension I will simply remind you of this policy.
Academic Misconduct: Exams are not collaborative – do your own work and also refrain from helping others. Exam content should be kept private until instructors have posted the exam results. Instances of academic dishonesty on an exam will result in a grade of F for that exam and a formal report of the incident will be made to the Office of Student Ethics. Please visit http://www.iu.edu/~code/.
Religious Holiday Policy: Students with conflicts between course requirements (e.g. examinations) and religious observances must contact their instructor during the first two weeks of the semester and follow the procedures outlined by campus policy, available at http://enrollmentbulletin.indiana.edu/pages/relo.php.
Help resources:
- Free on-line Finite Math help is available through our Math Learning Center (MLC) each afternoon Monday thru Thursday from 4 – 7pm EDT beginning Monday August 31. All students enrolled in M118 are welcome. For more information, please visit https://iu.instructure.com/courses/1887800
