Meet your instructor

Welcome to the Legal Environment of Business. My name is Todd Conover and I will be your instructor this semester. This is my twenty-sixth year teaching business law courses at Indiana University Northwest at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The bulk of my experience has been in the area of civil and criminal defense which has allowed me to travel from San Diego to Miami. I was admitted to the practice of law on June 4, 1982. Hard to believe that I'm still going strong. In addition to teaching, I am also Of Counsel with the Ohio based law firm of Curry, Roby & Mulvey, LLC.

This is a fun course. You might say that it's three years of law school rolled into one semester. Good to have you onboard. Okay, so what should you expect. You will be assigned to groups which will meet on a face-to-face basis. Those groups will be rotated with the balance of the class participating through zoom. This course covers interesting topics many of which are controversial. We will on review recent supreme court cases covering such topics as abortion, gun control and obscenity to mention a few. The class is highly interactive. Since my practice has varied throughout the years, I will try to provide real world examples of the subject matter we study.

I am available to communicate with you in any manner necessary. If you are experiencing problems in attendance or in the ability to complete coursework, please notify me. I will work with you to arrive at a agreeable solution.

I look forward to meeting all of you on August 25, 2020.

How we'll learn in this course

[Note to instructors: Use this space to highlight key characteristics of your course (in-person, online, or a blend of these instructional approaches). Consider how lectures or labs will be handled, due dates, assignments (alternative assignment options), testing, changes to policies (e.g., late policy, flexibility for those without access to tools). Also include information about where to access an updated syllabus.]

This course is divided into Weeks, as listed in the Modules tool. Each week will include:

material for you to read, watch, and explore;
a practice activity, usually a discussion.

I will provide you with feedback on each of the assignments so make sure to check your instructor comments .

Read the syllabus for more details on the course requirements.

Expectations for the [in-person, online, blended delivery] coursework

[Note to instructors: Students will likely wonder about how participation and attendance will be handled in different modalities.]

One thing to always keep in mind when taking any course is that the others with whom you interact throughout the semester - including me, your instructor - are human beings. The first rule of netiquette is to "remember the human" when you are communicating with me or with your peers. The second rule is to "adhere to the same standards of behavior online that you follow in real life." It's not likely that you would yell at, mock, or belittle another student in a face to face class so don't do it here. The feeling of anonymity that some people have when they are online can lead to those sorts of behaviors but they are not acceptable here or in any other online class.

Please take a few minutes and review all the Core Rules of Netiquette and these considerations for when you are attending class remotely.
