Welcome to the Humanities in Italy Study Abroad Information Page!
This program brings students from IU East to Florence, Italy for three weeks for studies at the Florence University of the Arts (FUA). The program is open to all IU students, but specially geared toward students studying at IU East. Students will earn 6 credits through this program: 3 in an online course taught by IU East professor Dr. Jessica Raposo, and 3 in Florence in a FUA course selection of their choice. The IU East course will incorporate enrichment activities that will take the students to concerts, museums, and other cultural sites in the region during their time in Florence. The goal of the program is to give students an immersive learning experience that incorporates the intersections between music and art in Italian culture over time.

When does this program run?
This program occurs over two phases:
-
-
-
- Spring 2023 semester: online class with Dr. Raposo
- Summer I 2023: travel to Florence May 13-June 2
-
-
Graduating this spring? You can still join us! Your graduation semester would change to June, but you would still walk in the May Commencement ceremony.
How much does it cost?
The fee for this program is $4875 $2275 $1455 after non-competitive scholarships and course fees are applied to the price.
This includes travel to/from Italy, our FUA tuition costs, housing, and admission to about 18 different cultural activities in Italy. Fortunately, IU East provides plenty additional scholarship opportunities for its students, and students from other campuses have scholarships they can apply for as well. The result is that students usually pay out of pocket about the cost of a plane ticket to Italy. Imagine - three weeks in Italy for the cost of the plane ticket!
Wait - there's an option to see more of Italy?
Yes! Students can elect to stay an additional 3 days and go to Rome with Dr. Raposo. While this is not a required excursion, it is a component students can choose to do as part of the IU program. Exact costs will be calculated when we are in the spring semester course, but it usually costs about $400.
Also, the Florence University of the Arts hosts an add-on weekend trip to Capri, Pompeii, and the Amalfi Coast. The cost for this trip is 480 euros.
Are there any prerequisites? Am I eligible to apply?
