IU East's Spring 2024 Study Abroad Program in Japan

Description

This cross-listed course will examine a broad survey of Japanese art history with emphasis on its influences from China, Japan, and more recently, the West. Special attention will be paid to topics concerning the diffusion of ways of artistic expression and forms of material culture across East Asia, visual practices by those who were both pro and anti-open-door policy towards the West, artistic cross-cultural exchange between Europe and East Asia such as “japonisme,” and how the meanings of these cultural artifacts and material culture change as they are absorbed into each other. It will also study how the cultural and intellectual influx from China and Korea brought in Buddhism and hence Buddhist art into Japan and its coexistence with Japan’s indigenous religion of Shintoism. It will also address the emergence of an international market for the sale and consumption of these objects as fashionable items for Western collectors.

Places to be visited are national museums, Shinto and Buddhist temples, and areas and neighborhoods that were some of the first places to house large immigrant populations from abroad:

East Gardens

Rainbow Bridge and Tokyo Bay

Kyoto:

Fushimi Inari Shrine: One of the most iconic sites in Japan, it is a Shinto shrine for the god of rice and business that inhabits an entire mountain filled with torii gates.
Kiyomizu-dera: A Buddhist temple on Mount Otowa
Kyoto Imperial Palace
Tea Ceremony and Maiko Performance in the Gion District
Shimogamo Shrine: a legendary 2000 -ear old shrine and excavation site
A side trip to Nara to visit Todaiji, the largest wooden temple in the world, and the national park where wild deer run around as protected animals as they are considered heaven’s messengers.

All of the degree-seeking IU East undergraduate students enrolled in the course
part of your program will receive a non-competitive scholarship of:

$750 from Academic Affairs as well as $550 from The School of Humanities and Social Sciences.

Eligibility:

There are no course or major prerequisites for this program - any IU student with a GPA of 2.75 or higher may apply!
