The 2025 program have two components:

Description
The program is divided into two phases:
1) a 10-day trip to Guyana, the Guyana Shield, and the Amazon Rainforest, and
2) an online component-Students must register must for any of these courses: SOC S382, ANTH A328, and INTL I220
Details
- Travel dates: March 13-22, 2025
- Semester: Spring 2025
- Online Course: Any of these courses: SOC S382, INTL I220, and ANTH A328 (courses taught by Professor Wazir Mohamed. Professor Ron Itnyre will be part of the field aspect of the program.
- Prerequisites: SOC S100 (Sociology and other Majors) or with consent of instructor- ANTH A104 (Anthropology Track); INTL I100 (International Studies Majors)
- Minimum GPA: 3.00 (or consent of instructors)

Letter of Intent - We will begin to process applications as they come in. We encourage students to apply immediately.
This letter needs to include:

- Two references (i.e., name and contact information of an IU East full-time instructor we could contact if need be)

Day 1-March 13 (Thursday) - Travel to Guyana – Overnight in Georgetown

- Travel by Bus to Georgetown
- Overnight-Herdmanston Lodge
Day 2-March 14 (Friday) - Day Trip by road and boat to Mahaica River – 6.30 am

- 3.00 pm-Tour the Parika/Ruby area and view the Bonasika Creek and the Savannahs.
- 4.00 pm-Stop and visit to Professor Mohamed's family home and village.

- 6.00 pm-Cultural immersion and meals on the West Coast-Visit to Anna Catherina Islamic Complex to participate in the Breaking of the Fast of Ramadan.
- 8.00 pm-leave for airport check in
Day 10-March 22 (Saturday) – Leave Guyana-Arrive in the USA and return home.

- Students lodge at Iwokrama Rainforest Resort for 3 nights (March 15, 16, and 17)
- Students lodge at Surama Eco Lodge for 2 nights (March 18 and 19)
- Students will tour and observe conservation and sustainability activities: Turtle Mountain, Nocturnal Night Spotting of Forest Dwellers, Walking Tour Above the Forest Canopy and between Trees, and the Mill
- Students will be exposed and have direct contact with professionals engaged in Forest and tree Mapping and observe the facility for milling and procurement of harvested forest timber in an ecologically and sustainably sound
- Students will be given opportunity to network with Indigenous counterparts at the Bina Hill Institute.
- Students will engage in one day cross-cultural understanding of forest life and the sustainable livelihoods project undertaken by the North Rupunnuni District Development Board in cooperation with the Surama Eco-Tourism
- Students will also get a feel for the ethnic, cultural make-up and the built environment of Guyana's Coast
