General Description
This course is required for all who wish to borrow a bicycle or e-bike from the Hoosier Bike Lending Program. We will review the top things you need to know about being equipped to ensure a safe and enjoyable ride. Topics include essential gear, clothing, carrying cargo, lights, and locks. Most importantly, we’ll highlight the rules of the road and being a safe and confident rider.
Course Learning Outcomes
- Apply essential safety practices for biking, including proper helmet fitting, pre-ride checks, secure parking, legal lighting requirements, appropriate weather-appropriate attire, and routine maintenance for optimal performance and safety.
- Identify and follow traffic principles, rules of the road, and appropriate lane positioning for safe and legal riding. Recognize the impact of your actions in traffic and foster positive interactions.
- Identify common causes of crashes, implement strategies to avoid them, and use techniques to navigate various road hazards.
- Apply defensive riding techniques, including anticipation and awareness, and use various bike facilities effectively for safer travel.
