Course objectives
This course provides an overview of the curriculum design and materials development in Teaching Korean as a Foreign/Second Language in university settings. We will consider broad issues such as syllabus design, materials development and evaluation, course planning, assessment, as well as specific topics on teaching listening, speaking, reading, writing, pragmatics, and grammar, classroom management, and technology in language teaching. This course offers students with ample opportunities of applying various teaching approaches and techniques to developing teaching material, textbook material, testing and other assessment material, as well as designing overall curriculum for a Korean language program in college level. Emphasis will be put on developing students’ ability to analyze and synthesize factors contributing to an effective language learning program.

Students Learning Outcomes:
The goal is two folds. One is to give students adequate training in developing materials in a contextualized framework and executing plans with proficiency-oriented and content-based instruction. The other is to offer consistent pedagogical training on revising lesson plans and developing a teaching portfolio. Students will continually improve their skills in producing teaching material through designing lesson plans, sample lessons for specific language skills, and testing material.
Students will be able to:
- Understand the theories of proficiency-oriented language instruction and assessment and their applications to teaching Korean as a foreign language.
- Read, understand, and think critically about current research pertaining to teaching methods and language teaching techniques to inform curriculum development.
- Develop activities and materials for Korean language learners and evaluate such materials based on criteria relevant to the concepts we cover in the course.
- Reflect on your own teaching experience and observations of other teachers in action.
- Provide a professional review of foreign or second language materials that can be used for initial textbook adoption, guidance in the use of materials, or the adaptation of materials.
- Convey to others a coherent, well-articulated, and theory-based teaching philosophy grounded in empirically tested research.
Assessment:
Students will be evaluated for the final grade based on the following criteria:
