HPER-E 100 (Pre-Yoga)

Course Description:

Pre-Yoga is designed as an introduction to yoga. The focus of all practices will be to help you explore the different components of yoga and develop internal awareness of what works for YOU. Students will learn the about the history of yoga, ancient concepts from yoga philosophy as well as how to practice safely. The goal of this class is to provide an introduction of yoga and for each individual to identify key elements of yoga that best support optimal functioning.

This class is 100% online. Students have weekly video guided practices, online quizzes, and discussions. Class assessments will measure understanding of key yoga principals. Discussions will be a place to explore personal experience of yoga practices.

What you will need:

  • Access to IU Canvas site. All course assignments & the final will be posted here by the second week of class.
  • Reliable internet access for Canvas and web-based resources.

 

Course Objectives:

This course conforms to the mission and guidelines of the Indiana University School of Physical Education Principles of Undergraduate Learning.

 

In this class, each student will:

  • Develop an awareness of some of the major concepts of yoga through use of the core skills (reading, listening, writing, analyzing, communicating and experimental practice).
  • Apply the principles and practices of yoga to personal practice (integration and application of knowledge).
  • Develop an awareness of the cultural, historical, and philosophical aspects of yoga in many cultures and countries as well as in our own community (society and culture).
  • Consider the path and yoga practices and their applicability to modern life (critical thinking).
  • Understand the impact of yoga on a personal, community and world-wide scale. Look at the scope of yoga, its past, present and future (intellectual breadth, depth and analysis).
  • Act within the defined terms of school ethics (ethics).
  • Show effective habits of mind through time management and organizational skills.



COURSE POLICIES:

Administrative Withdrawal: A basic requirement of this course is that you will participate in all class meetings and conscientiously complete all required course activities and/or assignments. Participation in this online class will be measured by assignment completion. If you miss more than half of the required assignments within the first 25% of the course without contacting me, you may be administratively withdrawn from this course. Administrative withdrawal may have academic, financial, and financial aid implications. Administrative withdrawal will take place after the full refund period, and if you are administratively withdrawn from the course you will not be eligible for a tuition refund. If you have questions about the administrative withdrawal policy at any point during the semester, please contact the instructor.

Course Requirements:

Students will earn a grade by completing weekly assignments including:

  • Read, watch, and explore assigned material
  • Complete practice video
  • Post in discussion, describing your experience this week (graded)
  • Complete graded quiz

All assignments must be posted in Canvas. Assignments must be posted by due date. All Assignments may be turned in early to avoid missing deadlines.  There are no points for late assignments. Correct spelling is necessary – points will be deducted from any assignment with incorrect spelling.

A+ = 200-195

A = 194-189

A- = 188-180

B+ = 179-172

B = 171-169

B- = 168-160

C+ = 159-150

C = 149-142

C- = 141-138

D+ = 137-130

D = 129-123

D- = 122-117

F = 116 & below

 

 

 

Evaluation of the course: Students will have the opportunity to evaluate the course at the last class meeting.
