SYLLABUS
The Consumer Health course provides an in-depth introduction to strategies and best practices for delivering consumer health information services in various types of libraries- academic, public, and hospital. Students will explore the roles of public libraries, academic health sciences libraries, clinic and hospital libraries in providing accurate and authoritative health information. Key areas of focus includes the definition and history of consumer health and consumer health information, health outreach projects, patient education, addressing health disparities, advocating for underserved populations, and ethical considerations in health information dissemination.
Meet Your Instructor
Welcome to LIS-S604: Consumer Health! My name is Elizabeth S. Blake, and I am excited to lead you through this course! Please call me Elizabeth or Liz (not Ms. Blake or Professor Blake). I am a tenure-track faculty librarian at New York University and my official title is the Life Sciences Librarian at the Elmer Holmes Bobst Library in New York City. In my current position, I liaises with l faculty, staff and students in the departments of Biology, Neural Science and Environmental Studies to build search strategies for literature reviews, scoping and systematic reviews. I am excited to share my passion for health sciences librarianship with you!
A little bit about me: I received my masters' degree in library and information science from the Pennsylvania Western University (formerly known as Clarion University in Clarion, PA) and then completed a three-year health sciences library residency program at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, PA . I was born in Espoo, Finland, but was raised in the suburbs of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
