General Psychology, PSY-P 103 17932
· Course Description (from the Bulletin): Introduction to psychology: its methods, data, and theoretical interpretations in areas of learning, sensory psychology, psychophysiology, individual differences, personality, development, abnormal, and social psychology.
· Student Learning Outcomes:
- Content: You will demonstrate familiarity with major concepts, theoretical perspectives, empirical findings, and historical trends in psychology. You will be able to:
- Describe major theories and theorists in psychology.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the historical development of psychological theory and method.
- Explain how psychologists study behavior at several levels of analysis (e.g., biological, intrapersonal, environmental).
- Demonstrate knowledge and understanding representing appropriate breadth and depth in the following concentrations in psychology: (1) developmental, (2) social, (3) personality and clinical, and (4) cognition, learning and neuroscience.
- Critical Thinking: Students will think about and view behavior through a psychological lens, i.e., using empirical information to understand the causes, correlates, logic, and consequences of behavior. Basics of research methods will be introduced, and students will begin to learn how to:
- Develop the reflective skills appropriate for an academic discourse, and to understand the tentative nature of knowledge, to tolerate ambiguity and to use skeptical inquiry.
