Course Description:
This course explores and applies skills for leadership and advocacy roles in occupational therapy applicable to client/ patient care and the profession.
Student learning outcomes:

Learning Objectives (LO): Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:
- Advocate as a health professional for patient/consumer rights, departmental and organizational settings, and the profession utilizing professional ethical principles from the AOTA Code of Ethics
- Explore leadership theories, roles, and responsibilities as it applies to occupational therapists, occupational therapy assistants, students, interprofessional practice, professional development, and higher education (scholarship vs. Teaching)
- Differentiate between legislation and advocacy within the profession of occupational therapy across state and national systems.
- Understand educational responsibilities of the occupational therapy practitioner within patient care, organizational systems, legislative affairs, interprofessional collaboration, and reimbursement platforms.
- Demonstrate professional development including lifelong learning, promoting the profession, student supervision, and OT – OTA supervision responsibilities at an organizational, state and national level.
- Understand different practice settings, employment positions and rules/ regulations for current practice, reimbursement, interprofessional collaboration, and sustainable service of occupational therapy to meet public health, academic, and medical needs of communities.
Grading Scale
To meet the quality standards for a graduate professional degree in occupational therapy, a student must earn a minimum grade of a “C” (73%) in all courses credited toward the graduate degree
