Requirement for completing Independent Study Class (PAHM V550)

*The major requirement for completing this independent study class (PAHM V550) is a Weekly Article Summary written by the student that reflects upon the independent study as a learning experience. Article Summary assignment are to be turned in to the course professor via Canvas as scheduled below.

*Weekly Article Summary: Each student will keep two article summaries of his/her weekly reading assignment routine from week 1 to week 6 during 6W2_Summer 2026 Semester. A successful article summary might review the primary themes of each two articles, any research questions and hypotheses considered, the population/sample studies, key data employed, main conclusions drawn, strengths and weaknesses of the approach taken, and broader implications drawn from the article (e.g., relationship to course concepts and topics). Not all articles will fit this outline, students may modify their summary to suit a particular reading.

Students are expected to prepare a brief summary of the main points from the readings in approximately 4-5 single-spaced pages.

Assignment Policy

All written assignments must be submitted in Microsoft Word, using Times New Roman font and 1-inch margins.  As is the norm in many policy briefs, documents should be single-spaced. All sources must be cited using APA format.  Guides to APA formatting and style can be found online at http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/01/ and at http://www.lib.berkeley.edu/TeachingLib/Guides/Internet/Style.html

Failure to adhere to these style and formatting guidelines for assignments may result in a point deduction equivalent to half a letter grade.

Late assignments will not be accepted, except in the case of a documented emergency.  Late assignments disrupt my ability to grade quickly and return graded assignments to students.

If you miss an assignment or test due to illness, you must provide a note from a doctor written on letterhead with the doctor’s name, signature and telephone number.  The doctor must be local unless you are out of state, in which case a doctor in your location is acceptable.

A doctor’s note fitting the above criteria is the only way to make up a missed assignment due to illness.

If you miss an assignment or test due to a family emergency, you must notify me via email before the assignment due date/test date.  In addition, you must provide a written explanation of the nature of the emergency, the dates on which you were away from school, where you stayed during those dates, the telephone number of the person with whom you stayed, and the name and telephone number of the officiating party (funeral director, minister, rabbi, etc.) in the case of a death, the name of the treating doctor in the case of a family member’s serious illness).  I understand that providing this information may be a burden on you at a particularly difficult and sensitive time.  Unfortunately, we have found that assignment deadlines and particularly tests have led to unexplained epidemics of illnesses and family deaths.

Disability Services

Students who have a documented disability or other needs that may require consideration during this course are responsible for contacting the Disability Services Office at 765.455.9301, Kelley Center Room 200 or via e-mail at disserv@iuk.edu. The office of Disability Services will make an assessment and then provide written notification for the faculty.

Please contact the Office of Disability Services within the first week of the semester or as soon as the need is identified since faculty cannot make arrangements for special consideration until written notification is provided. Documentation requirements and student responsibilities can be found on the Disability Services websites at: http://www.iuk.edu/ada

Policy Regarding Sexual Misconduct

As your instructor, one of my responsibilities is to help create a safe learning environment on our campus. Title IX and our own Sexual Misconduct policy prohibit sexual misconduct.  If you have experienced sexual misconduct, or know someone who has, the University can help.

If you are seeking help and would like to speak to someone confidentially, you can make an appointment with Beth Barnett, Room KC234, Kelley Student Center, 765-455-9553.  More information about available resources can be found here:  http://stopsexualviolence.iu.edu/help/index.html

It is also important that you know that federal regulations and University policy require me to promptly convey any information about potential sexual misconduct known to me to our campus’ Deputy Title IX Coordinator or IU’s Title IX Coordinator.  In that event, they will work with a small number of others on campus to ensure that appropriate measures are taken and resources are made available to the student who may have been harmed.  Protecting a student’s privacy is of utmost concern, and all involved will only share information with those that need to know to ensure the University can respond and assist.

I encourage you to visit stopsexualviolence.iu.edu to learn more.
